These heaps of what looks like rock or a giant stalagmite is actually a thermal vent with build up of travertine deposits. The story is that someone built a tepee over the vent in 1909. As it steamed through the top of the wickiup the water and mineral deposits would rest back down on top of the tepee and become solid. Over the years. This is what it looks like now. The same affect can be seen on the canyon wall next to the river flowing from the hot springs in Thermopolis Wyoming. Looking forward to a soak while we are here.
