Had no idea what we would be in for, but had to see for myself what exactly is up with the growing phenomenon that stemmed from one engineer's vision to a full-blown annual festival in Longview Washington. Round about the middle of August, if you find yourself in the Pacific Northwest, don't miss Squirrelfest. It must be seen to believe. You will go nuts!
The lore is that apparently there were far too many squirrel fatalities on the town's roads in Longview and a retired Engineer decided to do something about it. Inspired by craftier squirrels who crossed the road by traversing the high-wire (electric cables) that span the streets and safely make it across. This Engineer desired to design the better squirrel bridge (pictured below). Being a diligent engineer, he filed the proper permits with the city, and erected the worlds first squirrel bridge. Looks a bit like the Tacoma Freedom Bridge. And to his amazement, the neighborhood squirrels started to use it. Saving countless squirrel lives, and thus beginning an annual competition for who can build the best squirrel bridge and installing it, with the grand reveal and a neighborhood festival each year. The festival has now grown to a ridiculous size including bouncy house and musical entertainment. It is so large now that even the squirrel population of Longview have become quite embarrassed by all the attention.
